Blockbuster Super Bowl Commercials

Blockbuster Super Bowl Commercial

2007 is the year that displayed the highest cost for a 30 second spot during the Super Bowl to date. This also is the year that Blockbuster aired their first commercial during the game. Met with lukewarm reviews, this commercial featured the voices of James Woods, Bobcat Goldthwait and Jim Belushi. The lovable bunny and guinea pig, named Carl and Ray, had a slew of hit commercials from 2005-2007 including a break dancing scene and a prima donna moment to prove that Ray could be a movie star. The majority of these commercials were light-hearted and amusing, prompting ad executives during the 2007 Super Bowl to air a new installment of the hi-jinks of these two.

From their pen in the pet store across the street from a Blockbuster movie store, Carl and Ray decide it is time to get online access to the video establishment. We then bare witness to bunny Carl pummeling a mouse (not the kind for your computer) in an effort to click away for instant access. With each push, the little mouse emits a high pitched squeal, determined to get away from these two with no injury to his little mouse back. Ray, ever the thinker, then suggests that Carl needs to drag the mouse and he does so through the wood shaving bedding to which so many pet rodents are accustomed. The concept, I have to admit, is positively adorable, because everyone loves to see cute, life-like cartoons being completely wacky. I must admit, I was less than heart warmed at seeing the virtual beating of a mouse and other critics have certainly agreed.

Nonetheless, this commercial was voted a favorite by many viewers and met with several more airings after the Super Bowl ended. If you have not seen this commercial, judge for yourself. You can find it on several sites, including the Italian Blockbuster site. If you cannot read or interpret Italian, however, try Youtube or Ifilm to find what you are looking for. Blockbuster’s online site is dedicated primarily to finding movies online, so you will not find the furry little friends on there, but with just a quick search you will be shown a long list of interesting links with information you never thought you would discover.

These Blockbuster commercials are very fun and entertaining. Some critics claimed that the Super Bowl ad just left them feeling a little off after watching that animated mouse get pummeled, but many others still found their antics to be quite adorable. Download the commercial for yourself and then you decide. Maybe we will see another Carl and Ray up rising again soon.
