NFL Super Bowl

In 1967, the first National Football League Super Bowl took place as part of an agreement between the NFL and the American Football League. The idea was to take the number one ranked team from each division and pit them against each other for the claiming of the national championship title. Originally slated to be called “The Big One,” the Super Bowl was so named after the merger between the NFL and its rival the AFL took place and AFL founder Lamar Hunt jokingly referred to the event after seeing his child playing a toy known as a Super Ball. That ball is on display in Canton Ohio’s Pro Football Hall of Fame and the name, first put in place until a better title was decided upon, stuck and is now the most watched sports broadcast in the United States today.

The First NFL Super Bowl

On January 15th, 1967, the Packers of Green Bay, Wisconsin and the Kansas City Chiefs met each other on the field of Los Angeles’ Memorial Coliseum. The game debuted on network television to an audience of approximately 60 million and the viewer rate has been on the rise ever since. With a surprise twist, that game featured the inconsistent Max McGee who was only a backup player on the Packers and did not expect to see any play time. Out of the previous games played in the 1966 season, McGee only caught four passes with a sad total of 91 yards for the season. Much to the surprise of McGee and his teammates, first string wide receiver, Boyd Dowler was injured, sending the second-string player in to represent the team. Amazingly, Max McGee caught a total of 7 passes and gained a strong 138 yards to lead the Pack to the first Super Bowl victory ever.

NFL Super Bowl Champs

After that first Super Bowl, dozens of other teams have followed the path to glory every January. There is a three-way tie for the most Super Bowl wins in its history. With an impressive five wins each, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49’ers lead the league for number of championship trophies held. Coming in at a close second place with three wins each are the Oakland/LA Raiders, Washington Redskins, Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots. The Cowboys of Dallas also hold the incredible record of making 8 appearances in the past 40 Super Bowls, boasting a 20% victory rate, the best in the NFL and the history of the Super Bowl.
